Stella and the Stars
By Maggie Allen
With the way the street looked at night as the stars shone down, I almost felt like I could live there forever. Almost…
The wind howled in my ears. I heard a voice saying. “Go up there. Fly up there. You have the power, the magic, the hope, and the dreams. Stella, you can make it.”
“Stella, break the rope that tethers you to the earth, away from the stars and the sky and the countless galaxies. Break the rope, Stella, break it.”
And with a little bit of luck and a little bit of magic, I did it. I flew above the clouds, the sky, and the galaxies. I made it but a feeling of sorrow hit me. “Why am I so sad? I’m up in the sky. THE SKY…!!!! But I’m way too far from earth, away from my family and friends who care for me. What am I doing here? I want to go home. But half of me wants to stay here forever.”
There was a flash of light in the darkness. “Stella! I’m so glad to see you!”
“Yes?...Stella, are you all right?”
“Yeah I am! I’m here with you!”
“Oh Stella, I love you.”
“I love you too, Mom.”
“Want to go star gazing, Stella?”
“Yeah! Let’s go!”
“Whoa Mama, do you see that star? That big bright one? It’s so pretty. I feel like I’m looking in a mirror”
And so Stella lived in the stars and on the earth.
The City in the Sky
With the way the street looked at night as the stars shone down. I almost felt like I could live there forever. Almost.... Althea looked down into the street as rain poured down on the floating city. The streets were completely pitch black. The city felt as though it was lonely and gray.
Althea's mother (Lina) rushed into the house and said "It is happening again!!!!" The city was not shining with lights like it once was. Blackouts kept happening more often to the city. They knew if this kept happening the city would begin to fall from the sky.
Althea stepped outside to her balcony and stared into the dark, frosty air wondering why this was happening. She knew something had to be done about it fast! To help the people, the city, and the future! She wondered how a 13 year old could do anything about it.
Before Althea knew, morning was there and she was rushing outside to get to her mother's flying car to get to school. As her mother started the engine and the car bursted into the sky, she thought "I know I can't do it alone so why don't I ask my friends."
She got to school and hopped out of the car immediately yelling, "Bye mom!!" Althea ran to the lockers where she started talking to her friends, Max and Nanette about the blackouts and told them, "We have to do something about it!"
It was late afternoon when Althea got to her house from the long walk from her school. She walked up the stairs to her room staggering each step like she had weights on them. She couldn't lose her friends or her home.
Althea stared outside the window and saw a man in the street. Her eyes followed the man where he went to an electrical box and started cutting the wires. The moment happened so fast the man was gone in a second.
Althea called her friends immediately to come to her house. Her world was spinning in circles everything, felt dizzy and weird. She opened the door as fast as she could, Max and Nanette rushed in! Althea told them what she saw. They all agreed they would have to do something about it as soon as possible.
Everyday Althea, Max, and Nanette sketched out plans and ideas on how they would catch the man and save their beloved city in the sky.
Then the day came. They were walking home from school when they saw the same man cutting the wires. There was a big bang and the city titled and the lights went out. Althea, Max, and Nanette ran towards the man without hesitation and confronted him. Throwing questions and statements like, " What are you doing?!", "WHY?", STOP."
The man's name was Denis. Denis said in a firm voice, "The city belongs to the land and the sea. That is where the city belongs and I will make sure of it. Unless you can fix my problem and the people of the sea. You see you are ruining our city in the sea from your polluted floating cloud of dust! All of the heat you make comes right back into the sea. It is ruining our home. You are destroying and killing our oceans! What is from the land and the sea should stay unless you will figure out how to make your city more vibrant and safer from pollution. You see we use the sun rays and the earth's wind and what do you use?"
Althea, Max, and Nanette stared at each other with disbelief, but knew it was true. You could look around and see smoke coming out of the building, people coughing, and the environment around was just sick. Plants, birds and other creatures trapped in the city of fume. Plant's leaves were wilted with fear. They realized climate change has changed into something no one in the floating city would ever think of. The population they made hurt their world, their city, their people, and the environment everywhere around them.
They knew it was up to them and others to fix the problem now!
